About Thasos
ISLAND OF GODS
Already from the mists of myth and antiquity the first dwellers appear on Thassos. The island was named ‘Chrysi” by the ancient poet Aethra, but the name by which it is known for centuries is attributed to the mythological Thassos, either son of the Phoenician king Aginoras or of the god Poseidon. It cannot be clear, since the legend is many hundred years old.
According to Herodotus, Thassos, along with other Phoenicians, was the first settler on the island. While he was searching for his sister Evropi (Europe), he settled down exhausted on the island. Thus he named it after himself.
Thassos is often referred to as the “green emerald” of the north Aegean and is the northernmost and most green island of the archipelago (ca. 398 sq. km). With its mountains and deep blue see, it is one of the most beautiful greek islands. Here you can enjoy the thick pine tree forests, the silver shimmering olive trees, the sandy beaches and bays.
The island is very easily accessible from the mainland, either from the port of Kavala or Keramoti. Thassos stands out for its lush vegetation, countless olive trees, pine woods, crystal clear waters, its inhabitants’ traditional ways of life, archeological sites, modern shops and lively nightlife, all on one island.
On Thassos, visitors can enjoy the long sandy beaches, the old mountain villages and the picturesque fishing settlements. The main road, which is 98km long, surrounds the island and country lanes lead to the inland of the island. Various restaurants, taverns and bars can be found all over and the islanders organize traditional feasts and festivals. Throughout the summer, one can see plays or attend concerts in the ancient theatre in the main town Thassos and in Limenaria.
